Wind power is a truly sustainable “crop” that New Hampshire can harvest, like timber and maple syrup. It allows landowners to keep their land undivided, while contributing to the state’s environmental and economic health. The 48 Megawatt (MW) Groton Wind project was built with turbines manufactured largely in nearby Pennsylvania.

Jobs: The project peaked at over 300 workers, over 60% of whom are from New Hampshire.

Households Served: The Groton Wind Farm is expected to produce, on average, enough electricity to power nearly 20,000 average New Hampshire homes. At peak production, the wind farm is expected to produce enough electricity for nearly 58,000 New Hampshire homes.

Technology: The turbines are on 256 foot (78 meter) towers. Each blade is 139 feet long, for a total turbine height from foundation to blade tip of approximately 398 feet, depending on foundation size. Each nacelle (large box-shape that houses mechanical equipment) weighs almost 85 tons.

Local Economic Benefits: During construction, the project had a peak of over 300 construction workers on site, most filled by New Hampshire workers. The project has created 5 permanent jobs, and local contracts for supplies, maintenance, and plowing.

The town of Groton, population 593 with a total town budget of $546,000, will receive $22,000 for each turbine each year — a total of $528,000 for the first year, with annual adjustments for inflation. In addition the Town received payments during construction for Land Use Change Tax fees. Estimated annual payments to landowners total approximately $275,000, and the project will pay over $450,000 annually for state utility property taxes.

Other tangible benefits include upgrades to the local electrical distribution network that improve reliability and payments of state taxes and fees.

Energy and Environmental Benefits: Groton Wind will offset carbon dioxide emissions by almost 200 million pounds per year. That is the equivalent of removing over 16,500 cars from the road, or not burning over 200,000 barrels of oil each year.
